Linux For A Slow Laptop

Examining Old Desktop

There are old laptops in each house that can no longer function fully. Using standard operating systems, for example, Windows or Linux becomes almost impossible. However, you can still use the old laptop effectively.

Now many distribution packages will make Linux for a slow laptop the best option in comparison with other operating systems.

Several Linux distribution packages will work effectively on slow laptops. We will consider the most successful ones.

Lubuntu

Lubuntu is one of the most popular distribution packages that will work quickly on the laptops of the old generation. It is developed based on Ubuntu; therefore, it has a high performance. By downloading this distribution package, the user will receive a minimum set of standard programs.
A set of standard Lubuntu programs can be called Spartan - this distribution package will work fast even on slow laptops.

Even on laptops with a Pentium II processor or Celeron Lubuntu will work relatively quickly. The minimum system requirements for the Lubuntu distribution package: RAM - 128 MB and 2 GB on the hard disk.

Puppy Linux

Puppy Linux is the easiest among all existing Linux distribution packages. Despite the small size of the distribution package, its power is quite high. This circumstance allows you to use it even on the oldest laptops. New images will take no more than 300 megabytes, they have only the OS kernel and a narrow set of priority programs, such as a browser, audio player and image editor.

It is noteworthy that when loading and working Puppy uses RAM, which significantly speeds up the launch of most programs from the standard set.

Minimum system requirements are a processor with a clock speed of 500 MHz, the size of RAM - 128 MB and 512 MB of free space for installation.

Tiny Core Linux

Tiny Core Linux is on the list of small distribution packages. It successfully optimizes Linux for a slow laptop. The current text editors are more significant than this full-scale distribution package, which has a full-fledged graphical interface. The image size is not more than 16 MB. You can install it on laptops that are more than ten years old.

There are three versions of Tiny Core - Core, TinyCore, CorePlus.

  • Core is a real minimalist record holder - this distribution kit, having a standard console interface, takes only 11 MB.
  • TinyCore with a full-fledged graphical interface will take no more than 16 MB.
  • CorePlus will make about 116 MB - this is a complete installation image with a minimal set of programs.

Bodhi Linux

Bodhi Linux is an optimal "lightweight" distribution package, perfect for old machines. It is also designed based on Ubuntu. It works with optimal performance because there is nothing extra in it.
The Bodhi suite of programs is no different: file manager, web browser, text editors.

Considered distribution packages of its functionality make optimal use of Linux for a slow laptop. Assessing the pros and cons of each, you can choose the most suitable option even for old laptops.

  1. Thanks for the nice list of lightweight distros. I've used all of the above (except Tiny Core) on my ancient Averatec Win XP machine (with 750 MB RAM), and the best lightweight distro by far has been AntiX. I've never been able to configure networking on Puppy (user error, no doubt), and Lubuntu is actually too heavy. Bodhi is a great distribution and very lightweight -- just not as good as Debian-based AntiX, in my opinion. Tiny Core -- well, I'm sure it would work well, but it takes "minimal" to a level I'd just as soon not go....

    1. Well, I agree with you that Lubuntu is actually too heavy to old computers and there is another thing which made Lubuntu not possible to use: the last images is only for 64 bits processors. I have to change the distro of my mother's desktop to Antix because she used Lubuntu and the new upgrade is not disponible to 32 bits processors.
Other distro that runs well in older pcs and laptops is BunsenLabs (32 & 64 bits). I have run this distro for a long time in an old Dell Latitude C640 (Pentium III, 1,2GHz, 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD) but actually this laptop is with Antix 17.3.1 32 bits and it flies...

  2. I have a ten year old HP laptop running Linux Mint that now lives as a music player in my living room. It has all my music and my wife's music downloaded on it, two 15 year old external speakers attached, and it plays beautifully. It CAN be an emergency laptop in case the Grime Reaper comes for one of our regular laptops.
