When Jerry met Emma on the Ivory Coast

On Saturday July 27, 2013 a Jerry Marathon was held at the Attecoube community in the northern part of Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast.

The inhabitants of that community didn't ask to be told about that great event. Therefore more than the invited guests crowded the social center of Attecoube to see the principal guests who had created so much conversation.

Some came to touch them, others to take their pictures or to take pictures with them.

But who are the real Jerry and Emma?

Jerry and Emma are interplanetary stars who come from far away, but who are so Free and Open that they easily adapt to whatever environment they find themselves in.

Well, Jerry is not a person but an information infrastructure (computer or server) built of refurbished materials and housed in a jerrycan.

Jerry was born in Paris from a collaboration between Hedera Technology, a start-up created by Antoine Castaing and Jeremie Bourdoncle, and three design students from ENSCI: Laure Guillou, Xavier Auffret, and Chemsedine Herriche.

According to Jerry's inventors, the objective was to explore new ways to produce servers in a more responsible way. Among the other interesting prototypes, Jerry was the cheapest and easiest framework to replicate. They founded a non-profit organization ("loi 1901") to move the venture along. As for his (Jerry's) new companion Emma, originally Emmabuntüs: it is a Linux distribution derived from Ubuntu, built to refurbish computers cjontributed to the Emmaus Communities. Emmabuntüs is a word combining Emmaus and Ubuntu and pronounced Emma-boon-toose, just as Xubuntu is pronounced Zou-boun-tou.

How and where did this great love story between Jerry and Emma begin?

The encounter between Jerry and Emma took place August 5, 2012 during Free Saturday at the Cite des Sciences in Paris.

Next they participated jointly in the first Open Bidouille Camp in Paris on September 22, 2012.

Since then, the cooperation between those two simply to the point they no longer wished to separate. In that way Jerry became the hardware companion to the Emmabuntüs distribution during free software events.
